Dogs age at approximately 7x the rate humans do. So it’s not surprising that your dog should have a physical examination at least every seven “dog years”–that’s every year in human terms. And as your pet gets middle-aged–that’s over 40 in people years or over 6 in dog years–physicals are recommended twice a year.
“Not only do dogs get older faster than people do, but their ailments progress more quickly, too,” according to veterinary doctors.
A once-a-year physical gives your veterinarian a the opportunity to sit down and chat with your dog about what’s changing in his/her life. More importantly, yearly physicals let your pet’s doctor establish what is normal in your dog, so he or she will know when something is abnormal.
A yearly physical is good preventive medicine. According to the veterinaians, “Finding and treating diseases in the early stages gives your pet a much better prognosis than discovering a full grown disease,”. Your veterinarian may notice changes in your pet that you haven’t noticed.
During the physical examination, your veterinarian will look for systemic abnormalities. During physicals the veterinarian will move from the front to the back of your dog observing any abnormalities, starting with the eyes, ears, nose, and throat and moving to the lungs, heart, and gastrointestinal tract. Always checking for new lumps or bumps as he/she moves along.”
Heartworm tests should also be done at the time of the annual physical. Heartworm is a serious disease, common everywhere mosquitoes live. The physical exam is a good time to keep up to date on vaccines. Our veterinarian also suggests checking whether your pet has worms or other parasites once a year. A simple fecal test can determine whether your de-worming protocol is working.
Between annual examinations, be on the lookout for signs that your pet is having trouble: not eating, changes in weight, vomiting, coughing, sneezing, elimination problems, or other changes in behavior. Any of these may indicate the need for an extra visit to your veterinarian.
If your dog is healthy, you will find that he/she becomes more active.Engaging your healthy dog in activities is a sure way to keep him happy and healthy. The Dog toys you have packed away will once again become useful, once your dog feel better.
It is very important to take care of your Dog health in order to keep your dog healthier and happier.

Various contentions have been put forward in the dog world by some, (eg those against mixed breeds), that ‘hybrid vigor’ is allegedly not possible (for example) when breeding labordoodles (ie mixed breeding of Labradors and Poodles) as it is alleged that hybrid vigor is only possible with mixed breeding of unrelated animals (eg horse and donkey). However, that it not correct.
For example, see http://www.ermanz.govt.nz/resources/publications/pdfs/ER-IS-03-01.pdf:
“What is a hybrid?
A hybrid is an organism resulting from a cross between genetically different parents. Hybrids can arise from crosses between closely related species (interspecific hybrids) or by crosses between different types (subspecies, varieties, cultivars) within a species (intraspecific hybrids).
Hybridisation occurs naturally, but it is also widely used in selective breeding programmes for both plants and animals. The mule is an interspecific hybrid between the horse and the donkey, bred to combine some of the favourable characteristics of each parent. Intraspecific hybrids often show ‘hybrid vigour’ (heterosis), growing more vigorously and yielding more than in-bredlines.”
Hence, labrodoodles are ‘intraspecific hybrids’ (ie are within species breeding) and do show hybrid vigor.
Also, see http://www.country-wide.co.nz/article/449.html:
Another important but often forgotten principle is what happens when you interbreed the first cross (F1) progeny. In essence if you breed (F1) sires and dams together, there will be less hybrid vigour in the progeny. Like wise hybrid vigour also drops if you breed back to either of the parent breeds.
Our Labradoodle puppies are F1 generation (ie first cross between Labrador & Poodle), maximising hybrid vigor (or heterosis), and minimising inbreeding depression, etc. And have purebred parents with champion bloodlines/pedigrees.
The F1 (ie first generation) of Labradoodle puppies have more hybrid vigor than the second or so generation, are less likely to be more variable then some other generations, and also have the least inbreeding depression.
Another interesting scientific point to note about our F1 Labradoodles is that research has shown that these have increased longevity or rates of survival (eg research has shown up to 4 years longer), due to the absence of inbreeding (such as that occurring in purebred dogs). And the same research has shown that the higher the rate of inbreeding (eg in purebreds), the lower or shorter the longevity or survival rates. This relates to the term known as ‘inbreeding depression’, and which is
described in more detail at inbreeding depression and inbreeding depression.
And this may be due to the benefits from hybrid vigour, especially compared to the negative effects known as ‘inbreeding depression’ present in purebreds.
Unlike some breeders, we can guarantee the genetics of the puppies are solely Labrador/Poodle, as the parents of our Labradoodle puppies are purebred, and with pedigree papers. And this also ensures that they are definitely F1 puppies.
The term ‘hybrid vigor’ is used in various fields, such as breeding livestock, rabbits, aquaculture, plants, cats, dogs, etc.
And rather than just us giving you our opinion etc re hybrid vigor, we thought you may like to read information from other sources. So that you can make an informed choice or decision.
So, below are some relevant extracts re hybrid vigor, and links to their sources:
From MSN encarta online:
‘hy-brid vig-or
improved traits resulting from crossbreeding: the increased growth, disease resistance, or fertility seen in hybrid species.’
From Encylopedia Brittanica online:
‘Increase in such characteristics as size, growth rate, fertility, and yield of a hybrid organism over those of its parents.’
‘Plant and animal breeders exploit heterosis by mating two different purebred lines that have desirable traits. The first-generation offspring generally show, in greater measure, the desired characteristics of both parents. Since this vigour may decrease if the hybrids are actually mated together, the parental lines must be maintained and crossed for each new crop or group desired.’
From Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary:
‘heterosis
the marked vigor or capacity for growth often exhibited by crossbred animals or plants — called also hybrid vigor’
From report by CSIRO:
“The benefits of hybrid vigor only appear in crossbred animals that have parents of completely different breeds.”
From a transcript of the Senate:
“veterinarians recognize the concept of ‘hybrid vigor,’ especially in first generation hybrids”
From United States Department of Agriculture, University of Arkansas, and County Governments Cooperating:
“The highest level of hybrid vigor is obtained from F1’s, the first cross of unrelated populations.”
“Hybrid Vigor – An increase in the performance of crossbred animals over that of purebreds, also known as heterosis.”
So, there should be little (if any) doubt that the first generation (ie F1) Labradoodles have the maximum hybrid vigor and the least inbreeding depression compared to other generations etc.
The cost of proper care for your dog or purchase of general pet appropriate products can run into an awful lot of money over the years. However, when your passion is simply the birds that come to visit, then the expense is fairly minimal.
That doesn’t mean, though, there aren’t some bird care costs and effort associated with something as simple as a solar powered bird bath.
If you’ve purchased a solar bird bath, you probably want to keep it running and beautiful for a long time. Well, keep reading for a helpful maintenance schedule and some great tips that will keep your bath looking great and attracting birds for years to come.
Start With a Sealant
Immediately after you purchase your solar bird bath, protect it with a sealant coating. Whether it’s concrete, plastic or stone, buy the applicable sealant to protect the bath and its finish from the elements.
Ideally, a good sealant coating should keep the color and finish safe and looking great for years, no matter what the weather or the birds do to it.
If you’re using a spray sealant, spray your bird bath from top to bottom and allow it to dry completely before you fill it with water. Otherwise, the still-damp sealant could seep into the water supply and potentially poison your feathered visitors.
Create a Rough Grip Surface
Just like humans, birds don’t like slippery surfaces – especially near their bath water. So, if your bird bath is slippery or smooth, you may want to fill the bottom with a bit of sand, a coat of concrete, a basin mat or even loose and rough stones from your garden.
Keep an Eye on the Water Levels
Because solar bird baths use sun power to fuel a water pump that runs water from one basin to another, it’s an important to keep an eye on the water levels. On a hot and windy day, you might see already low water levels evaporate completely. If there is not enough water running through the pump, it could burn out.
So, protect your bird bath by keeping an eye on the water levels during sunny and hot days. Try to check those water levels every few days, particularly during hot spells.
Clean the Bath Regularly
A clean bird bath will not only prolong its life, but that kind of care will also keep the birds coming back. First, remove all the water that’s in there. Avoid using any harsh chemicals and instead, simply clean the bath with a good brush or your hand. If you must, use a mild dish detergent, but rinse the basin out well as birds are sensitive to soap and chemicals.
You should be washing and refilling your solar bird bath at least once every 5 to 7 days. This will keep the water free and clear from algae and also mosquito eggs, which left unchecked could contribute to spreading diseases like West Nile Virus.

Barking is a perfectly natural canine behavior. Birds sing; frogs croak; and a dog barks, whines and howls. If you have a dog, you better expect some barking, whining or howling. It is unrealistic and unfair to think you can train your dog to stop barking altogether. However, you, your neighbors and your dog will all be much happier if the barking is under control.
Dogs are social animals. They need friends and companionship. Understand them and train them. Check out this link Dog Training Masters Mini Course for help. You will not disappoint
Basic Training
You’ll also have far more success stomping out barking if you’ve given your dog a basic training course. Learning to sit, stay, and heel helps you dog understand that there are times when you’ll want him to do certain things and he’ll be rewarded or praised if he gets the behavior right. Then, when it comes to training him to stop barking, he’ll at least know you’re trying to teach him something.
When you do train the barking out of him, set up training sessions. Don’t try to train your dog only when the barking moment arrives. Instead, train him ahead of time. If your dog barks every time there’s a knock at the door, have a friend come by and knock. Give your dog a treat before he can bark. You’ll condition him to look to you when there’s a knock at the door instead of reacting by barking.
If your dog barks at people and other dogs when you’re out for a walk, have a friend come around the corner at you with his dog. Go back and forth around that corner, commanding your dog to not bark. After about 20 minutes of this your dog will understand which behavior is displeasing you. Be patient. Training takes time.
Divert Your Dog’s Attention
Sometimes controlling your dog’s barking habit is as simple as using one of many diversion techniques. In many cases, the principle of “out of sight out of mind” works well to control dog barking. Some dog owners have changed see-through chain-link fences to solid fences to keep passers by out of view of their dog. You can also get the object of their barking out of sight by changing what the dog is looking at. Perhaps there’s something in your own yard that’s triggering his barking, maybe a resident squirrel? or the neighbors cat that sits up on the wall while you’re at work?

Have you ever wondered how rescue dog training worked? After all, they are able to find victims, regardless as to whether they are alive or dead, whenever a tragedy or disaster strikes.
A Dog’s Ability For Rescue Dog Training
There are some Healthy Dogs who have a magnificent sense of smell. Since they are smaller than humans, they can also penetrate small areas where humans cannot reach. All of this, combined with their rescue dog training, makes them well worth the praise they get. This is especially true because they think that this work is fun.
An important part of rescue dog training is teaching these dogs to be focused on the task at hand, regardless of what else may be going on around them. Of course, different breeds of dogs are better able to do this. For this reason, different dogs have different jobs. A Bloodhound is renowned for their ability as a search dog while Newfoundland’s are used in avalanche rescues and Labrador Retrievers are the absolute best cadaver dog in the world. You will also find that German Shepherds, Belgian Malinois and Golden Retrievers are also very good at tracking and following scents.
It is highly recommended that Pregnant Dogs who love to play participate in rescue dog training because they will do anything to receive a reward.
How Rescue Dog Training Works
Rescue dog training focuses upon a dog’s sense of smell. With their sense of smell they are able to pick out a target odor amongst millions of different odors. So, whenever a dog is tracking a person, it will focus upon the scent of skin cells that come off of the human body. They can even be sensed in the water in cases of drownings. In rescue dog training these dogs are trained to sniff the air and follow the scent to find the victim.
Of course there are other things that a rescue dog is trained to look for. In rescue dog training and Dog Excercising, a dog is also trained to take the right position so that the rescue can be executed. From there, a dog must also learn how to use everything that is has been trained to do as a single exercise. Another important part of rescue dog training is for the human to learn how to read the dog’s eyes. Since a dog’s eyes can be very expressive it can also read the handler’s mood. This is 1 of the many non-verbal signals that a dog will learn during its rescue dog training.
There are many reasons why people want Bulldog pictures but no matter the reason behind it, there is one thing that almost all owners have in common, and that is that they want high quality and professional looking prints without having to spend too much money. While some people do not mind paying several hundred dollars for something that can be done in your backyard for thirty or forty dollars, most people would prefer to save that money for something else.
Not only will you have more time with your dog to make sure that you are getting the best shots possible, you will have much more flexibility being you can take the pictures inside your home, in your yard, in the park and just about anywhere else your heart desires. With a lot of the professionals, they are restricted to their studios and using some backdrop they pull down behind your dog. With a little work, you can do better then that without a doubt.
Even though you are used to seeing professional photographers with these huge and expensive cameras, they are not truly needed in order to get excellent and professional looking Bulldog pictures at home. If you already have a fairly decent camera that you are already using for other things, it will work fine for this project. Also, if it is a digital camera that is even better because you can use programs on your computer to clean up the photo and lighten and darken it where it may be needed.
Now, even though you may sometimes print photos straight off of your computer, if you are truly looking at wanting to have professional looking Bulldog pictures, it is generally better that you save your pictures to a disk and take them somewhere to be printed. This will not only allow you to have better looking prints, but you will have a lot more options for the sizes that you can pick from and it would be cheaper then using up all the ink that is in your computer.
Now, one thing that a lot of people forget about when trying to set up for taking Bulldog pictures is whether or not the dog is going to actually sit there and stay long enough to sit the shots that you want. If your dog is going to not listen when you tell him or her to sit and listen, it would be best to take a little bit of time to set aside for training. In the end, you will be extremely happy that you did, as the pictures will come out so much better.
There are a lot of articles that can be found on the web and a lot of Bulldog information books that are packed full of information on training dogs. There are a lot of different ways to train a dog on the sit and stay commands and there are ways that can be accomplished in a few days and those should be perfect for what you are trying to do. In the end, it will all be worth it as long as you take your time with it all.
Bulldog pictures done by a professional can cost hundreds of dollars but all that can be avoided by learning how to take pictures at home. A lot of Bulldog information can be found on the Internet and you may need this if you need to train your pup before beginning to take the Bulldog pictures.
In the United States many Bulldog rescue units have been created. The Internet has a wealth of information regarding any inquiries about Bulldog rescue. Bulldogs need to feel that they are part of the family otherwise they will exhibit undesirable, despicable behavior. Bulldog rescue groups screen adoption applicants very carefully to ensure an ideal match between dog and owner, as the animal requires a lot of love and attention on a daily basis. Because Bulldogs are so intolerant to heat they cannot be left outdoors unattended for long stretches of time. If the animal is exposed to heat beyond its tolerance level this could lead to pending death.
The main objective of a Bulldog rescue is to find loving homes for abandoned, strays and unwanted dogs. The Centers are non-profit run and all volunteered staff in most regions of the United States. On a yearly basis the centers place hundreds of dogs in happy homes.
Many of the pups are only weeks old when they arrive at the rescue. Torn from their mothers causes them to have severe health issues, genetic disorders and challenging behavioral problems due to neglect and abuse. It is very important that the dogs are kept cool at all times as they are very intolerant to heat. If the Bulldog is overly exposed to heat they will have difficulty breathing and excessive panting. The best remedy is for the owner to cool them down as quickly as possible with a cold shower or bath. Feeding the dog an ice cube will also help to cool this sensitive breed’s body temperature. The best defense is prevention and be sure to remember the dog is best indoors within air conditioned areas during hot temperatures.
Your local pet fairs, dog shows and pet supply stores are a great start for seeking reliable information about a Bulldog rescue. Information booths are set up for this very purpose. Cyber space lovers will find that the Internet is an excellent source for attaining information about rescue centers in your area. Most centers have their own websites. These sites are great for providing photos and stories of the many dogs in the center as well as educating the public about Bulldog and their adoption process.
Presently the many rescues across the United States are desperately seeking adopters as they have many Bulldog pups only a few weeks old. These pups have been torn from their mothers love and protection and consequently have developed serious medical maladies, genetic disorders as well as severe behavioral problems, adopting a Bulldog can be quite challenging yet rewarding. Aside from the problems due to neglect and abuse, the dogs can be very messy when eating or drinking. They also require regular grooming or they will develop painful infections.
